This morning we had a lot of clouds on the mountains and they made for the most wonderful sunrise. I got this photo of the sunrise at about 5:30 am. This photo wasn't cropped and I was happier with the composition.
Then tonight a storm was coming over the mountain and the sun was shinning in spots on the mountain. I grabbed my camera and the tripod and headed down the hall. I was trying to arrange the camera around my neck and dropped the tripod. Crash, bang and down it went taking the glass on the end table with it. The glass broke and fell to the carpet. But that didn't stop this crazy old lady...off I went to capture the last minutes of sun on the mountains. Here are the photos I got.
I'm still not happy with my compositions. It seems that I get too excite over the subject matter and don't pay enough attention to the compositions of the picture. I had to crop these two photos to get the right balance. It just seems like I can't get it through my head to take my time and get the composition right! Maybe some day!
Last week's Photo Quest was black & white landscapes. I took a couple of photos of a great cloud formation over the mountains behind my house but didn't get them downloaded until tonight.
So here are my very late entries for last week's Photo Quest.
1st the color photo:
Now the b & w:
Next one in color:
Now b & w:
I like the last one the best as the sky is a little darker and the clouds show up better. All photos shot in RAW, processing was setting the black point, contrast and used the vivid b & w in converting to b & W.
We have a beautiful spring day. I spend most of the day outside. We got the two Italian stone pines planted. They have been in pots for over 2 years! They must feel so good. I dig big holes and put in some nice soil for then. I checked and rechecked the drip system and now poor hubby must add new line to the drip for the new pine trees and replace some of the parts. I gave the pines a good watering and some special stuff for new bees. They should do well.
I also planted some new Texas Rangers, a Peace rose to replace a rose that died last year and a new plant that has lovely purple flowers. I trimmed the established Texas Rangers too. I also re-potted 2 tomato plants that I hope will give us some great tomatoes. I'll do a post on that you will get a kick of how I'm growing tomatoes in the desert.
Here is the sky that was above our heads as we worked this morning.
I;m taking this photography class, Secrets for Better Photography on-line. I can post up to 3 photos per lesson for comments. Today work was amazingly busy and when I got home I needed some stress relief. So I got my old Minolta and my canon and two tripods and went west to the 100 acres next door and take some photos at sunset. I've posted the photos here and my comments as to what I was trying to accomplish.
This was an example of natural light, using the rule of thirds for placement of the subject and a repetitive pattern in the lines of the straight arms of the saguaro cactus.
In this photo I used the rule of thirds to position the saguaro cactus in the left 1/3 of the photo, the natural light of the setting sun is lighting the mountain and the saguaro, also there is good balance between the light in the sky and the dark of the land.
I'm finally feeling a bit better today. I got the camera out and took these photos of our sunset tonight. If you look closely you can see the cholla cactus lined up under the setting sun. This sunset reminded me of the ones you see of the setting sun in Africa. My little camera didn't capture the sun as round as I saw it yet another reason for a better camera. :-)
I wasn't planning on taking sunset photos. I guess I was tired of taking the same old photos again and again. But when I saw this sunset I just took my breath away. Our sunset usually have a lot of orange and red and not a lot of pink. In this photo the setting sun was reflected in the underside of the couds.
After I took a few photos, I went inside started dinner, then went back out later to finish feeding the horses and the sky was on fire. OMG, it was so specticular. I had to drop the feed buckets, run back to the house and get my camera and tripod. I should have taken a panarama photo as the whole south sky and the south west sky were red. It was so amazing. This photo doesn't really come close to what the whole vision was but it is what I captured.
And with that I wish you all a good evening and a great week!
This weeks cahllenge: So get out there and show us the effect weather is having where you live! Trees blowing buses of nuns around? Click! Thousand foot tidal wave carrying area your town? Snap! Dagger-sharp shards of ice falling like God's wrath from heaven? Ka-stab!
Here is my entries:
It was a good week for photos, here are some I took of our weather this week. First group is sky and sunset shots.
ne side of the yard has dark rain clouds and the other has great white clouds and blue sky. Check out our soupy, muddy, wet road.
Cold, burrr.
Goldfinches enjoy the raining day.
We have a storm coming in this weekend so I think these clouds are telling us the weather persons are right...a storm is coming soon. I loves how wispy these clouds look and how the setting sun lights them up.
The sun was setting more the north of the Tucson Mountains and Sombrero peak but the light pinks and purples were to pretty to miss. This photo is a little washed out as I was losing light but I would like to make a painting of this one. The sky was so alive with color and the clouds closer to the mountains were very pink.
This is another photo of the sunset using my telephoto so you have a different look. I took all these photos without my tripod as I was walking Jo-Jo and couldn't carry the tripod. F stop was 8.0 and shutter speed was all over the place from 1250 to 140.
